why has intel had no competitive gaming cpu’s sub $150 for over a year now?

The 2200g (<$100) came out ~13.5 months ago and matches the performance of the 8100 when overclocked with the stock cooler despite the 8100 being 30% more expensive. That plus the fact that the 2200g can do 1080p 30 with its vega 8 igpu makes everything intel has to offer gamers below its i5 9400f ($160) a terrible value.

The i3 8100:

I get that intel has a shortage and it has hit the low end of its product stack the hardest which explains in part why there are no 9000 series processors lower than the 9400 out right now but I cant figure out why they dont at least lower the 8100 to match the price of the 2200g. I get that pricing of pentiums might be stepped on but at the same time who in their right mind is buying a dual core cpu for $100 in 2019. There is room in the pricing distribution to put the pentiums at 75/80/85 dollars with a healthy $15 dollar gap to get to the 2200g/8100 performance at $99.

In any case, at $99 you’d at least be able to argue for the 8100 based on not having to overclock and also providing a superior upgrade path despite it lacking the significant value that ryzen has via its vega 8 at that price point. With ryzens new processors supposedly coming out soon, I cant help but feel that there is going to be a huge backlog of unsold intel cpus because the prices are way too high relative to the performance. Once the new amd processors arrive, the 8100’s superior upgrade path will likely be no more and there will be no reason to buy it at any price point.
